The Star of Destiny
The Star of Destiny is calculated from the numbers in your full date of birth, in this fashion:
MM
+ DD
+ YYYY
XXXX (X+X+X+X= SD)
For example: 7
+ 4
+1776
1787 (1+7+8+7=23/5)
In this instance the Star of Destiny of the USA is 5. This relates to the planet Mercury, which happens to rule the Ascendant of the USA's Nativity. (and no, it's not the sign you might think!) It also rules the MidHeaven of the country's chart as well. Most Astrologers use the time for the signing of the Declaration of Independence as the birth time for our nation, and all this Mercury activity is a perfect picture for the event... the signing of a document! Mercury! (More on the chart of our nation later!)
Let us take another example, that of an historical figure. Since we have already used the birthdate of the USA, why don't we look at the Star of Destiny of our first president, George Washington?
2
+ 22
+ 1732
1756 (1+7+5+6=19/10/1)
President Washington's Star of Destiny was 1, related Astrologically to the Sun. The Sun is a symbol for Kings and fathers and people in authority. These people shine in the world, often rising to positions of honor or fame. And of course we often call George the Father of our Country. There is a myth in circulation that it had been proposed to make him our king, but there is no historical evidence that this actually occurred. Still, the symbolism is apropos.
The Star of Destiny represents what we came here to accomplish. It tells us what we are really like and what we are fit to do, naturally and often without training. It is that which reminds us of our purpose on the planet, and can also be an indicator of vocation or avocation. It answers the musical question, "who am I?" and tells what skills we bring with us to the table. It is a source or power and energy that we may depend on.
Now, you may wonder why I suggest calculating the Star of Destiny in the manner suggested above. When performing the calculation in this fashion, we avoid generating Master Numbers. The Master Numbers are 11, 22 and 33. In Numerology, all numbers (other than these Master Numbers) are reduced to a single digit in all Numerological calculations.
The Master Numbers 11, 22 and 33 relate Astrologically to the outer planets: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Like these potent planets, the Master Numbers show Gifts, but also the responsibilities that go hand in hand with these Gifts. Remember the old saw, "with great power comes great responsibility!" If we fail to act with discipline or reverence, if you will, these numbers can indicate tests, trials and tribulations!

When the Star of Destiny is the number 1: You are a born leader, given the ability to organize, inspire and breathe life into new endeavors. You are a bit of a pioneer in whatever field you are drawn to, but may find yourself strangely attracted to: the stage, music, writing or directing. You will generally rise to the top of your chosen field, but may have to overcome difficulties with those in position of authority over you. They may sense your innate talents, and react. If they are wise, they will give you a certain amount of freedom to accomplish your goals. If they react badly, you may find that conflicts with superiors will spur you to move onward and upward. Here it is best to follow the higher side of your nature and seek your dreams elsewhere rather than to engage in battles of the will or Ego. You may find that one of your gifts is the ability to improve on that which has already been established. You have the talent to see what is working in a given situation, understand what is not efficient, and find new, creative or bold ways to make changes that can revitalize outdated or outmoded systems.
When the Star of Destiny is 2: You are a peace-maker. You are comfortable working in the background to ensure harmony and tranquility where possible. You are gifted with an amazing memory, an uncanny ability to tap the powers of the subconscious mind, and many people would call you "psychic". You seem to know things, without always knowing how you know them. Naturally empathic, you can often pick up on the emotional or physical pain of others. Your strength is in allowing other people to shine their Light, while you work quietly behind the scenes, supporting and nurturing them. Your gift is that of the light bearer or receptacle (2 is the Moon), you can collect the light from others and reflect it back to them when they need it most. This is the vibration of the "mother", whether the 2 is female or male, your urge is to help, comfort and support. Here the caution is not to become carried away with your fears or insecurities. When you understand that Fear is the opposite of Love, you have the key to finding your peace of mind; using the power of love to cast out fear! Music, medicine, cooking (and eating), photography or drawing (freezing memories in the form of pictures) or artistic pursuits come as naturally to this vibration as working in banking, real estate or even government work. You understand what it takes to be a good partner, and you have a knack for bringing people together for a common goal.
When the Star of Destiny is 3: You are a natural seeker of Truth, in all its varied expressions. From Universal Laws to those created by man; philosophies and religions, higher education to sports and gambling, you pursue and dispense knowledge liberally and with great vigor! You have many gifts to share including Faith, Laughter and Creative Imagination. 3 has long been known as a mystical number in that it relates to all of the various Trinities: The Father, Son & Holy Spirit; the Maiden, Mother & Crone; Isis, Osiris and Horus; Body, Mind and Spirit… well, you get the idea! You have the ability to see something in your Mind’s eye, and bring it forth into manifestation. The obstacle that you must overcome is the tendency to scatter your energies and skim the surface in your studies, becoming a jack-of-all-trades rather than a master of one. You can succeed in any endeavor as long as you maintain your focus. Your downfall tends to be your lack of stick-to-it-iveness! You love to laugh, and are gifted with a divine (or devilish?!) sense of humor. You may find that others come to you with their problems, filling their cup in the wells of your eternal optimism. You tend to see the best in people, and can be a natural teacher, counselor or preacher (whether on or off the pulpit). You may find success in writing or publishing, Law, or working with animals or children. Good luck tends to follow you… and though you may never be rich, you will find that you have money or support when you most need it!
When the Star of Destiny is 4: you are a complex individual, hard to pin down, and surprisingly often not at all what you appear to be. You may have two very distinct presentations to the world: one is conservative and workaday, stable, rational and ultimately practical, while the other is unpredictable, intuitive, and oft times what can only be described as a little "out there"! Your Star of Destiny is Uranus and you share many characteristics of the sign Aquarius. There is the side governed by Saturn, and that more in tune with the vibrations of Uranus. (In old Numerology, the number 4 was the negative presentation of the energy of the sun. In this context, "negative" does not mean "not positive" so much as more internal or receptive.) You're a natural mechanic, engineer, mathematician or scientist – you have the ability to take ideas and make them work. In some way you appreciate that which is rational, logical, practical and technology oriented, whether that technology is scientific or "spiritual". Your Gift is the ability to take the measure of a person, idea, enterprise or invention, and in some way improve its performance. You like to know what makes things tick, and at some point in your life you have probably attempted to take things apart and put them back together again. You are gifted with sudden flashes of perception, but your insights come while you are focusing on a problem, using your keen vision to penetrate it secrets. As you explore the problem (or a person, situation or item) under your microscope, as it were, you enter a meditative place where answers will be drawn to you as if to a magnet. Then, in a flash, your solution reveals itself! You're a great friend, loyal and supportive, like the proverbial rock. You are far more interested in knowing what motivates others than revealing too much about yourself.
When the Star of Destiny is 5: you are versatile and multi talented. You love anything new and exciting and are fond of travel and meeting new people. New opportunities lie in all directions for you. The number 5 is associated with the planet Mercury and like this changeable trickster, your mind is quick and you have excellent powers of observation. You have a gift for words and languages and you have a keen perception as to the need of the public and the masses. Those influenced by this number could sell ice cubes to Eskimos! Any line of endeavor that calls for long hours of routine work or confinement without variety or contact with other people does not give the number 5 the chance to grow or develop. Though you learn easily, the number 5 is not naturally a deep student, gathering much information, but often changing its interest before lasting results are gained. Those with this Star of Destiny often find interest in occult, mystical and religious presentations. The number 5 seems to grasp the meaning and usefulness of these studies and is able to bring them down to the level of those seeking the higher or soul side of living. You may have a talent for mimicry could make a great comedian, actor, or entertainer. Your keen perceptions and sharp observational skills could also make you an excellent author or journalist. The biggest pitfalls for the number 5 to avoid are a tendency toward gossip and scattering of their energies.
When the Star of Destiny is 6: you are influenced by the planet Venus, Goddess of Love. You are drawn to anything that involves art, music, creativity and sensuality. You can be very tactile and love the feel of silk, suede, velvet and other textured materials. You might even have a penchant for gardening, cooking, sculpting; anything that allows you to roll up your sleeves and dig your hands in. Above all, you seek harmony and justice, and can be a staunch supporter of the underdog. Responsibility follows the 6 all the days of its life and in all of its undertakings, but 6 is capable of taking this, for it is motivated by a high sense of duty. The number 6 prefers to act in a conventional manner and according to established standards and seeks the harmonious way of adjustment rather than discord; it is deeply disturbed and confused by the unlovely and sordid in relationships or situations. It seeks to right wrongs at all times and in a kindly, generous way. Though the number 6 dislikes confrontation, it often enjoys polite debate. Those with this Star of Destiny can appear placid and calm on the surface when underneath their blood may be boiling. It can take a lot to make you angry, but when pushed past the breaking point, you can become the proverbial bull in the china shop. Later, when the fire has died down and reason returns, the 6 will seek reconciliation and harmony can again prevail.
When the Star of Destiny is 7: you are sympathetic and intuitive. You have a soothing, comforting presence and may find yourself involved in medicine, counseling, alternative healing or meditation. You share a love of reading with the number 5, and can get lost in literature, movies or theatre. When you turn your keen mind and inner strength to any subject you can excel. The number 7 is associated with the planet Neptune, and those influenced by it are often otherworldly, ethereal and open to inspiration. It is best for people with this Star of Destiny to avoid drugs and alcohol as they can be extremely sensitive to medications or intoxicating substances. Neptune also rules illusion and delusion and at some point every number 7 person will have to confront these issues within themselves or through others. They instinctively know that honesty is the best policy, but being intensely private, they often practice the art of the white lie; their motivation though is generally to protect the feelings of others. When they are evolved, they make great leaders in both the secular and spiritual worlds. Though a 7 may not always be "religious" they are often attracted to spiritual or metaphysical ideas. They have an amazing sense of humor and are often natural storytellers, gifted with the ability to captivate their audience be it through acting, writing, music, teaching or just everyday conversation. 7 people often use this gift to mask their introspective natures. Truly, they are dreamers and poets who enjoy a certain amount of seclusion to follow where their inspiration leads.
When the Star of Destiny is 8: you are practical, methodical, responsible and ambitious. This number is related to Saturn, Lord of Karma. You are an "old soul" in a kid suit! Like the sign Capricorn, you come into this life with a sense of duty and responsibility; a feeling that there is a mission you must accomplish. You take life seriously and may even look older than you really are in your youth, but age gracefully and retain a youthful quality well into your old age. You may feel a certain attraction to money and power, and these things may come easily to you when you work with diligence, discipline and perseverance. This Star of Destiny can show a certain divine awareness learned through many past incarnations. 8 is a "double number" in that it is masculine, strong and active as well as being feminine, passive and amenable to being molded. Together it expresses the divine in material form; separated it can show sorrow and destruction. As the two loops of the number eight give it the desire to be fair and see both sides of a question, it can make you a fine judge or counselor. Of the many gifts the number 8 can impart are a dry (yet wickedly funny) sense of humor, executive ability and a deep understanding of inner motives which, when used constructively, can improve things for mankind. Though 8 can be more of a mental worker than a menial laborer, you are unafraid to “roll up your sleeves” to get a job accomplished. Often one born under the number 8 has had to face a domineering and exacting parent who has made them feel unworthy in some way. In this case there can be a tendency to depression which the 8 can overcome, using the wisdom and insight gained to help and motivate others.
When the Star of Destiny is 9: you are compassionate and humanitarian; some numerologists call this the number of the metaphysician. Traditionally, this number has been associated with the planet Mars. The Single Number 9 is strongly connected with the Name Number for Jesus Christ, who symbolizes the Spiritual Warrior. Though Gifted with higher knowledge, compassion and a divine mission, he was quick to show his temper to “those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money” at the Temple in Capernaum. 9 is the Alpha and the Omega, winding down one cycle as it ushers in the next. It combines: the out rushing force of the 1,the receptivity of the 2, the imagination of the 3, the form and function of 4, the ability to communicate of the 5, the harmony and balance of the 6, the perfection of 7 and the judgment and wisdom of 8. At your best you fight for the rights of those less fortunate, and at your worst you can be ego bound and “all about yourself”. As stated elsewhere, where there are great Gifts, there are also many responsibilities. The challenge of the 9 is to perfect the Self so that you might help others along the way on the Path. Having tread the way many times, you can shine a light for those not as far along as yourself, learning to share the true Gift and lesson of the 9: forgiveness. Remember the words of the Nazarene as he was tortured on the cross, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”
